Allaah Made Hands

16 09 2006

Assalaamu ‘alaikum.

I’ve found a cute hand craft activity which nicely compliments Umm Sadiqah’s Allaah Made Hands project (which I also did a few months ago).

I can do things with my hands!

Enjoy!

Learning Colours

16 09 2006

For the last two weeks or so, I’ve been musing on how I’m going to get Junayd to recognise his colours. This has not been an easy task at all. I’ve tried the sit down and point out colours thing, matching similar colours idea… they just don’t seem to be very effective.

I kinda gave up for a while because I hate the feeling of frustration. However, Junayd seems to be taking the lead on this (duh! Montessori stuff..) and I’ve found that he’s kinda (and not the use of that word) learning his colours by playing with his large bricks. For some reason, he likes to get them out while I’m cooking and will make a stack and run into the kitchen with his creation. He’ll then ask me, “wha-daat?” To which I will say, “that one’s green…” or whatever colour(s) his creation is. He now knows the colour green mashaa`Allaah which surprised me one day because he just came out with it out of the blue.

Therefore, I guess we need to let our children lead the way with their learning. It’s a trial and error thing with homeschooling – something I need to keep hammering into my head. Where one thing doesn’t work, another will, inshaa`Allaah.

Letter Picking

14 09 2006

Assalaamu ‘alaikum.

When homeschooling, there are times when you’re not sure that your child’s grasping what you’re teaching them and I’ve felt like this on many occasions with Junayd. Sometimes I ask my husband whether my expectations are too high or whether it’s just too early – he usually agrees with both statements. Nonetheless, I remain determined that I shall not, inshaa`Allaah, put him into a public nursery. Therefore, I’ll continue to persevere inshaa`Allaah.

I like to make sure that Junayd’s actually grasping what we do. I know there are those who don’t believe in testing children and the like, but I need to satisfy myself that the whisperings which I get (that tell me that I’m wasting my time and that he’ll never ‘get it‘) are wrong. So, what I’ve started with him recently are what I call ‘letter picking’.

Reading Book Record

11 09 2006

Assalaamu ‘alaikum.

Long time no update! Yes, alhamdulillaah, I have still been doing things though I may not say so on the blog. My latest project was creating a reading record book to record the books that I read with/ to Junayd. This way, I can keep track of what’s hot and what’s not. [yeah I know, it's a lame cliche!]

This is what the front page looks like:

Please feel free to download it, print and use inshaa`Allaah. Don’t forget me in your sincere du’aa.

WARNING: It’s a large file! Reading Record Book
