Assalaamu ‘alaikum.

I’m posting a lil ‘heads up’ to let you know that there’s a new page which lists what I call schooling essentials. If you have anything to add to the list [or wanna just list your essentials] please visit the page and comment!

TIP: Keep It Simple!

20 08 2006

Assalaamu ‘alaikum.

Before I decided to embark on this journey, I always wondered what full-time homeschoolers did about cooking lunch for themselves and their children. I recall speaking to one sister in particular who said that her cooking time was the children’s lunch break and more often than not, it was extended to accomodate for the time that she spent cooking, the time she and the children ate and the time it took to clear everything up.

I’ve recently found that lunchtime works best for me when it’s kept light and simple. There usually doesn’t need to be hours in the kitchen trying to whip something up. I tend to stick to pasta, noodles, sandwiches and other ‘cold’ food – however, it really depends on what mood I’m in. Most of the time I cook a larger dinner so that leftovers (i.e. rice etc.) can be heated thoroughly and eaten the following day.

There’s no need to spend laborious hours in the kitchen. Just keep it simple!

Poster 3

17 08 2006

Assalaamu ‘alaikum.

I’m not following the Letter of the Week curriculum so rigidly now – I’ve adapted it to Junayd’s needs a little more; I’ve also included the Arabic alphabet because I’m not satisfied with him only learning English.

So, on our poster for this week we have:

English Letter:
‘c’ – reinforced with an eyeless picture of a cat.

Arabic Letter:
Baa`- ب

Number:
2 (two) – this was a little silly because it was after sticking the number onto the poster that Junayd decided to let me know that he already knows this number!

Shape/ Colour:
Red Circle

I’ve decided to scrap the animal section because it didn’t prove to be very useful – or at least that’s what I think.

Happy pre-schooling!

Letter ‘b’

17 08 2006

We’re still sticking with doing one letter at a time and Junayd seems to need more than week for each one. I like to make sure that the letter is actually learnt, so we really are going at snail’s pace.

Mashaa`Allaah, he knows the letter ‘b’ and is able to recognise both capital and lowercase letters. For this letter, this was the song we did:

/b/ is for ball
/b/, /b/

A bouncing ball
/b/, /b/

/b/ is for ball
/b/, /b/

A bouncing ball
/b/, /b/

You can kick it
You can roll it
You can bounce it
You can throw it

/b/ is for ball
/b/, /b/, /b/

A few days later after introducing the song to him, I saw he got the hang of it mashaa`Allaah.

Also, for this letter we focused on birds and butterflies. Now I need to make a song for the letter ‘c’. I did once, but I forgot it!
